Save Haringey Nursery Schools

We the undersigned petition the council to (1) continue to provide financial support for Haringey’s three state-funded nursery schools: Woodlands Park, Rowland Hill and Pembury House; and (2) lobby the Government to provide proper funding to ensure the long term sustainability of state-funded nursery schools. State-funded nursery schools across the country are at a crossroads. Funding changes mean they may be forced to close within the next few years if the government does not take steps to fund them properly. We need support from Haringey to keep our nursery schools going in the meantime.

State nursery schools have excellent outcomes with regard to closing the achievement gap and supporting children with special needs. State nursery schools are legally required to employ highly-qualified teaching staff and leadership, who are proven to give young children the best opportunities for academic achievement and enabling social mobility. Progress for all groups is very strong and the integrated nature of the provision contributes to highly effective and responsive support for families.

Campaigning at national level is very important because unless government makes specific provisions for nursery schools, the local authorities will not be able to keep them going. But there are some positive signs that the government recognises the value of state nursery schools and the Department for Education has committed to launch a consultation in regard to the future role of state nursery schools and how best to secure their high quality provision for the longer term.
