Save the Cavendish Tree

We the undersigned petition the council to preserve the mature tree located outside no. 42 and no. 44 on Cavendish Road, N4.

This healthy, mature and well-loved tree is being threatened with removal.

Evidence shows large trees improve climate, filter toxic atmospheric pollutants, contribute to biodiversity, and support ecology, health and wellbeing. They help us reconnect with nature and are an important part of our area’s identity.

This tree has peacefully coexisted with the surrounding properties for many years. We have been advised by the local branch of Friends of the Earth that it is unlikely to start causing damage now. The tree is already subject to a regular pruning plan to prevent it outgrowing its location. Removal of the tree could in fact cause significant subsidence due to its extensive root network drying up (a process known as “heave”).

Less mature trees, such as the council might offer to plant as a replacement, are welcome, but cannot provide the magnitude of valuable ecosystem services that mature trees do.
